As a health IT professional, are you paid the salary you desire? Our recent healthcare IT salary reportmay be the key to unlocking the secrets behind those who make more money in the field.
Our survey found the mean salary for healthcare IT professionals is $89,879.43, with 30 percent also receiving a bonus of, on average, $13,100.52.
In general, most health IT professionals are well-paid, but there are a few factors that place some behind the rest in terms of paycheck amount. Factors include everything from industry experience level to even demographics.
For example, men are paid nearly $17,000 more than women annually. Though the gender gap isn’t necessarily something we have control over, there are other steps you can take to start earning the healthcare IT salary you desire.
Based on our findings, here are a few ways you can increase your salary in health IT:
1. Obtain a certification.
We found certified workers make an average of $10,000+ more than those without certifications.Obtaining a certification is easier than it sounds. Some certifications, like CompTIA, don’t require any courses, only 500 hours of hands-on experience in health IT and a test. If you’re already working in the industry, all you need to do is tally up your hours of experience and take the exam. The exam costs $250-$300, but you could recover that cost quickly when the certification gives your health IT salary a boost.
2. Gain more experience.
Industry experience makes a significant difference in your paycheck, our survey found. The average salary of a professional with health IT experience was $89,241.53, while the average health IT salary for those without industry experience was only $54,237.98.
Of course, experience comes over time, but there are a few ways you can help accelerate your industry experience. For example, if you are already working in the field, try taking a few IT courses alongside your day job to learn a new skill in the field. Or, if more schooling isn’t an option, try shadowing someone from another department to learn what they do.
The broader your skill range, the more abilities you’ll have in your department leading you to training and, eventually, management. More skills also give you a stronger argument when it comes to negotiating your salary.
3. Work for a consulting company.
Our survey found those working for consulting companies make $109,715.42 annually on average. Becoming a consultant does require some industry experience, as you will be advising others in the industry. However, if you have plenty of experience in the field, it might be time to use your wisdom to advise others.

4. Change roles at your current company.
We found project managers pulled in the highest salaries last year by far, an average of $111,648.73. Following closely behind were healthcare informatics professionals, systems analysts, and implementation consultants.
If your current salary isn’t up to par, try switching roles. Go back to school, obtain a certification, or even train on the job to obtain the experience you need to work in a position that pays what you need. The healthcare IT industry has numerous opportunities for career growth — seize them.
5. Move to a different region.
If you live in the Midwest or the Southeast, you might want to consider moving to the Mid Atlantic region for an instant salary boost. Health IT professionals living in the Mid Atlantic region make $106 million annually on average, whereas those in the Midwest make a little more than $81 million.
Of course, if moving isn’t an option, you can always change careers within the field or go back to school to obtain experience that will make you more valuable at whichever company you choose to work for.
