Perspectives on Urban Education invites the submission of manuscripts for the upcoming Spring 2018 issue. We encourage authors to refer to earlier issues of Perspectives as they prepare their manuscripts for submission.

We welcome submissions from researchers, graduate students, practitioners, policy makers, and youth to publish studies in progress, as well as findings from completed research and reflections on practice. We also welcome submissions that present content in creative ways through multimedia formats.

Fall 2015 Issue (call closes June 1, 2015): Teacher Education as Possibility and the legacy of Maxine Green

Of teaching in “dark and constraining times,” Maxine Greene wrote,

“it is a matter of awakening and empowering today’s young people to name, to reflect, to imagine, and to act with more and more concrete responsibility in an increasingly multifarious world…. The light may be uncertain and flickering; but teachers in their lives and works have the remarkable capacity to make it shine in all sorts of corners and, perhaps, to move newcomers to join with others and transform” (2003, pp. 72-73).

Perspectives on Urban Education, Penn GSE’s online student-run journal, is interested in papers, commentaries, and notes from the field for our Spring 2014 issue. The focus of this issue is: multi-modalities within urban education.

The term “multi-modality” refers to how textual, audio, and visual modes in combination with media and materiality create meaning.

Our special issue is now live on the website!  http://urbanedjournal.org/archive/volume-10-issue-1-summer-2013/ A broad range of stakeholders have contributed including teachers, students, researchers, and community members.  The issue takes a critical look at our current educational crisis in Philadelphia providing deeper context, descriptions of resistance, and imaginings of what is possible.
