John R. Johnson, Ph.D.

Dr. John Johnson is an assistant professor in the Department of Special Education, College of Education at San Diego State University. Dr. Johnson teaches courses addressing issues related to the characteristics and education of youth various types of disabilities; working with youth with youth disabilities in general education classrooms; developing and implementing curricula and instruction for youth with severe disabilities; and methods for conducting research in education. Particular emphasis is place on infusing pedagogical understandings of constructivism and critical pedagogy to a cultural understanding of the disability experience. He is involved as a community activist in areas related to advocacy, housing, transition, employment, self-determination and leadership development for youth with disabilities and their families. His primary focus and interest as a person with a disability is supporting the involvement, participation and representation, leadership of persons with disabilities and an authentic understanding of disability that emerges from the narratives of the disability community.
